The "Golden Window" for Stroke Care

Why Minutes Count:

During an ischemic stroke, about 1.9 million brain cells die every minute that blood flow is blocked. Clot-dissolving medicines and hospital treatment work best when given as early as possible after symptoms start.

What NOT to Do:

  • Do NOT give aspirin until a hospital scan has ruled out bleeding in the brain.
  • Do NOT offer food or water; swallowing may be impaired and the person could choke.
  • Do NOT wait to "sleep it off" or wait for family to arrive before calling for help.
